the number of bets is so small that nothing can be really said about the first month of 2010. In a sample as small as this anything can happen. In fact the number of matches is not even that big because of the early limits have been so low in some matches that the same pick has been taken 2-3 times in some cases with a bit lowered price. I also missed some good value picks because of plain personal stupidity and time management, the matches are played at awkward times in the winter.

Finland this week
The season is not really getting too much closer, but a couple of matches will be played this week.
Tonight friendly indoors at Hämeenlinna, when visiting MyPa meet FC Hämeenlinna. Hämeenlinna is testing players, and won poor TPV earlier at home while MyPa have already visited FC Honka and deserved the 1-1 draw they got looking dangerous and lively at times. In the other friendly against PK35 they won 0-1 away, but as pinpointed out several times the results in these matches are impossible to read, too many substitutions and tests going on. The performance, form and readiness are that count.
MyPa is readier at this point, and an away win looks likely. MyPa - 0,5 @ 1.84

In the league cup this weekend AC Oulu will host FF Jaro. Home team won a promotion after last season at Ykkönen, and Jaro have faced a lot of changes and have been active on the transfer market to both directions. Jaro are not looking too strong at this point with weakened squad and players injured at otherwise engaged (Matrone at test in the UK for example) , but I have faith in the coach Alexei Eremenko Sr that they can put up a fight. Possibly pick something later.

EDIT: FT 3-2 (0-0) The odds dropped down to 1.58 which is a ridculous price for AC Oulu under any circumstances. I can sense a lot of trouble for Asian bookies this season.

I have discussed about this earlier, took JJK + 0,5 @ 1.98. Let us see if the match takes place, it is still very cold out there.

Africa tonight
Have taken so far early Egypt - 0,25 @ 2.23, and according to the drift it looks like a solid bet, which naturally have very little to do with possibly winning the bet.
Mixed feelings about the Nigeria vs Zambia encounter and I will leave any decisions after the kick-off.
EDIT: The best Cameroon performance so far and a loss of half a stake. Was really expecting more defensive errors from them and earlier. Did not see that bad ref mistake coming where the non-goal was rewarded.

Even the list of actual bets became long, way too long even for my own liking, but hell, what can you do if they appear to be value? You probably end up dropping the winners and choosing only the losers.
There was a lot of action last night, Cups are exciting to watch, usually a bit more challenging to analyse.

Short list for European picks 20th Jan 2010
These are the ones I am most interested so far for tonight, but need more info, odds moves or live observations before doing anything. Spurs + 0,25 I have taken, and Nigeria -1.5 but the odds have risen and you get -1.25 at the same price now. The African markets have behaved funnily from the start.
Edit: not much left of these, took Monaco and Auxerre with + handicaps though. Kortrijk is another prospect in the Belgian Cup.

Finland league cup kicks off 22th January with 2 exciting matches
Which, to be honest, is very good news. Not that I do not like European football because I love it, but to make a profit out of it requires a lot more hard work (if you can call watching football on telly as hard work, well there is some trading involved) than my own leagues. There is also a need to use secondary sources which is not my preferred style of doing things.
All the information and knowlegde about Finnish football is already cumulated in my database and in my head.
Haka will host JJK on Friday at 12.30 unless it gets too cold (-10 forecasted which would be acceptable) as the match is scheduled to take place outdoors, and last season´s runner-up FC Honka welcome third placed TPS at Esport Areena, indoors, at 14.00 CET.
I have my estimations more or less ready, but need to get my bets in first to be able to discuss this any further. The markets at smaller leagues are way too vulnerable and the margins too small and there is really no room for spoiling the advantage of getting your hands into fresh early asian prices!.

It helps a lot in trying to identify some new players for the participating clubs. HJK, Tamu, KuPs, Haka, Lahti, PoPa, City Stars and JK Viljandi Tulevik.

EDIT: Surpisingly the early odds came today to Sbobet, unfortunately only with the following lines which I happily took already, but with limits and the odds dropped right away.
Honka did sell their playmaker and most influential player Joel Perovuo to Djurgården and also Rasmus Schuller will be out for several weeks, but there is a lot of depth in the squad still, and at home at Esport they have been almost invincible year after year. TPS have lost all of their midfield including best players Wayne Brown and Kasper Hämäläinen, not to mention the talismanic and very peculiar manager Pasi Rautiainen and should be suffering again at Espoo. Last time around they lost 4-0 if my memory serves me right, but it could had gone a lot worse.
Honka - 0,25 @ 1.77
is a steal, but the JJK odds - and handicaps - are the ones which will go down soon! Pure madness from our Asian friends and obviously estimated directly from the final table of 2009. JJK 2010 is the better team of these two!

Pre-season in Finland finally kicking-off!
You all are obviously aware that the League Cup starts 22nd January with all the excitement and glory, but fortunately that is not all! The friendly season is on at last, and teams from all top leagues are busy filling their training programs with friendlies - mostly to be played indoors.
Last night two Veikkausliiga teams started 2010 with following results;

To my big surprise also PK35 match was also in offer at asian bookies. Usually they do not like the matches where full 90 minutes is not played; because of training schedules most indoor matches have to be finished within a period of 90 minutes, including ht break - and the actual playing time is something like 2 * 42 minutes...
That was a reality check for you, this is not Anfield.

A fact, which is likely to increase the popularity of the League which is one of the few (semi)professional leagues on during the European summer season.
The League office miraculously managed to fit in all matches so that they do not clash with the South African World Cup. A big Hand from here!

Arkistojen kätköistä on löytynyt todellinen helmi: Komsomolskaja Pravdan numero loppuvuodelta 1959. Erikoista lehdessä on, että se on päivätty 1.1.2010 ja erikoisnumero kertoo siitä, miltä elämän piti tänään näyttää Neuvostoliitossa.Lehden kuvitteelliset artikkelit ovat täynnä naiivia tulevaisuudenuskoa ja neuvostopropagandaa - vailla pienintäkään aavistusta siitä, että koko maa lakkaisi olemasta jo 1991.
Vuonna 2010 Neuvostoliitossa elettäisiin lehden mukaan luontaisessa vaihdantataloudessa eikä rahaa olisi käytössä lainkaan. Rikollisuus olisi täysin tuntematon käsite ja kaikki raskas työ hoidettaisiin nerokkaiden koneiden avulla.
Yksityisomistusta ei tunnettaisi laisinkaan, vaan jopa autot olisivat yhteisessä käytössä.
Limusiini lainaan
Yhdessä artikkelissa kuvaillaan esimerkiksi kirjoittajan mielikuvitusmatkaa halki Moskovan.
Eräänä hetkenä kirjoittaja tajuaa, että hänen kadunvarteen jättämänsä auto onkin kadonnut, sillä jokin toinen neuvostokansalainen on tarvinnut sen omaan käyttöönsä. Mutta ei hätää, kyse ei ole varkaudesta, vaan kirjoittaja yksinkertaisesti ottaa seuraavan lähellään olevan auton omaan käyttöönsä - ja se osoittautuukin hulppeaksi viisipaikkaiseksi limusiiniksi.
Myös "kaupat" toimivat samalla periaatteella eli siis asiakkaan ei tarvitse maksaa niissä mitään, vaan kaikki käyvät vain yksinkertaisesti hakemassa kotiinsa sen, mitä tarvitsevat.
Lehden artikkelissa maalaillaan, kuinka kaupassa on nyt tavallista enemmän asiakkaita, koska on uusi vuosi. Normaalisti neuvostokansalainen nimittäin aterioi vuonna 2010 julkisissa ruokaloissa, mutta juhlan kunniaksi monet haluavat poikkeuksellisesti valmistaa jotain erityistä herkkua kotonaan.
Lehti ennusti kännykkäkulttuurin
Tekninen kehitys on edennyt sitä vauhtia, että ihmiset puhuvat toisilleen kannettavilla näköpuhelimilla - eli tämä veikkaus ei itse asiassa osu kovin kauaksi nykyisestä kännykkäkulttuurista.
Lehden toimittajat onnistuvat ennustamaan oikein myös vuoden, jolloin ihminen astuisi Kuuhun, vaikka tapahtuma sattui tasan kymmenen vuotta lehden ilmestymisen jälkeen.
Sen sijaan aivan oikein ei mennyt ensimmäisen kuukävelijän nimi ja kansallisuus. Lehden kuvitteellisen artikkelin mukaan 1969 Kuun pinnalle astui nimittäin neuvostokansalainen nimeltään Kirill Avgustov eikä suinkaan yhdysvaltalainen Neil Armstrong.
Ei alkoholia
Utopian mukaan vuonna 2010 neuvostokansalaiset liikkuvat paljon helikoptereilla, joita he lainaavat lukemattomista helikopteripisteistä. Lentämiseen tarvitaan tosin lupakirja, mutta koska neuvostokansalaiset ovat kaikki niin rehellisiä, kenellekään ei tule mieleenkään pyytää ketään esittämään omaa lupakirjaansa.
Yksi helikopterilentäjistä on 125-vuotias neuvostonainen, joka on ajan trendin mukaan elänyt huomattavan iäkkääksi ja on yhä kovassa kunnossa.
Terveyden säilyttämisessä neuvostokansalaisia auttaa, että maassa ei ole viimeiseen kymmeneen vuoteen käytetty lainkaan väkeviä alkoholijuomia, vaan alkoholia kuluu ainoastaan lääketieteellisiin tarkoituksiin.
Uutta puhtia parantolasta
Neuvostoliitossa on myös paljon elinsiirtoklinikoita, joissa ihmiset voivat käydä vaihtamassa kuluneita elimiään uusiin. Eikä kaikki terveydenhoito tapahdu suinkaan maan päällä, vaan myös Marsissa.
Lehdessä kuvataan, kuinka Marsiin on vastikään avattu ensimmäinen sanatorio (parantola) nimeltä Pozitron. Sanatoriossa asiakkaana olevat "työläiset ja insinöörit" saavat nauttia muun muassa "keinotekoisesta solariumista".
Pisimmällä on kuitenkin Kuun valloitus. Mielikuvituslehden mukaan Kuusta on tullut ihmisen toinen koti ja siellä on muun muassa lukuisia tehtaita, joissa hyödynnetään Kuun metalleja.
Neuvostotiedemiehet ovat utopian mukaan onnistuneet kehittämään myös menetelmän, jolla Siperian ikiroutaan jäätyneet mammutit herätetään henkiin.
Lehdessä maalaillaan, kuinka "Lämpölääketieteen instituutissa" on parhaillaan heräämässä henkiin yksi mammutti. Sen aivotoiminta on jo käynnistynyt ja uudeksi vuodeksi odotellaan sydänääniä. Moskovalaisille mammuttia luvataan esitellä jo vuoden 2010 helmi-maaliskuussa kaupungin eläintarhassa.
Siperian ikirouta sulaa sittenkin
Vaikka moni ennustus menee pieleen, lehti onnistuu kuvittelemaan hämmästyttävän kaukonäköisesti mielikuvan Siperian ikiroudan sulamisesta. Neuvostoutopian mukaan kyse ei tosin ole nykytiedemiehiä huolestuttavasta ilmaston lämpenemisestä, vaan neuvostotiedemiesten kehittämästä maalämpösysteemistä.
Lehti kuvailee, kuinka "atomit ja ihmiskäden lämpö" ovat lämmittäneet Siperian niin, että sadoilla hehtaareilla entistä tundraa kasvaa nyt ykkösluokan vehnää ja napapiirillä valmistaudutaan parhaillaan ensimmäisen sitrushedelmäsadon korjaamiseen."
