League cup started with a couple of games and expected winners. Late goals in both matches were unwanted and unnecessary. At friendly front promoted SJK destroyed KuPS who are still struggling with width of player material.

Sen piti olla alun perin miehet vastaan pojat, mutta ei se kuitenkaan ihan sitä ollutkaan. TPS:n nuori joukkue nimittäin taisteli Liigacupin avauksessa FC Interiä vastaan varsin miehekkääsi, vaikka raitapaitojen rakennustyö on vielä täysin kesken. Inter kuittasi kuitenkin ne kolme pistettä lukemin 3-2.

- Aika haastava tilannehan tämä on, kun meillä oli kuusi sopimuspelaajaa kentällä ja siihen päälle testimiehet. Loput eivät ole edes treenanneet meidän kanssamme. Nämä nuoret täyttivät kentällä kuitenkin kaikki paikkansa. En ole koskaan tottunut näitä paikallispelejä häviämään, enkä ole päävalmentajana hävinnyt yhtäkään paikallispeliä Veikkausliigassa. Enkä siihen jatkossakaan aio tottua, TPS:n päävalmentaja Marko Rajamäki kuittasi.

Inter aloitti hyisellä Kupittaalla yllättävän hermostuneesti ja oli sählätä pallon omaan maaliin jo parin minuutin peli jälkeen. Inter sai rivinsä järjestykseen kuitenkin melko pian, kun Severi Paajanen runttasi pallon sisään vastaiskun päätteeksi 13. minuutin kohdalla. Inter näytti menevän menojaan, kun Mathias Lindström pääsi puolen tunnin kohdalla sutimaan jo 2-0.

TPS ei kuitenkaan luovuttanut, vaan ajoitti takaa-ajon. Riku Sjöroos otti pystypallon upeasti haltuunsa, kiersi Interin puolustuksen ja keskitti. Maalin eteen syöksynyt Bujar Ahmeti pisti päätä väliin, puski tyhjiin ja tilanne olikin ennen taukoa 2-1.

Inter sai lopullisen 3-1-maalinsa vähän halvalla, kun Kalle Kaupin matala laukaus painui verkon perille 72. minuutin kohdalla. Santeri Peltola kajautti pallon ohi Jere Koposen vielä lisäajalla ja näin kauden ensimmäisen derbyn lopputulokseksi leivottiin 3-2.

Ottelu osoitti, että Tepsin juniorityö on erittäin hyvällä tolalla, mutta joukkue tarvitsee varsinaista liigakautta varten kuitenkin myös kokemusta ja rutiinia kokoonpanoonsa.

- Me tarvitaan uusia miehiä, se on ihan selvä. Olemme todella huolissamme, turha sitä on kieltää. Tarvitsemme nopeasti nimen omaan uusia sopimuspelaajia, jotka sitoutuvat tähän joukkueeseen. Nämä nuoret lahjakkuudet tarvitsevat kaikkein kipeimmin sitä tukea ympärilleen juuri nyt, Rajamäki painotti.

- Veikkausliiga alkaa reilun kahden ja puolen kuukauden kuluttua. Ei näille nuorille voi vaan sysätä kerralla kaikkea vastuuta, hän vielä muistutti.

FIN season start with league cup; Inter Turku vs TPS

There is one game today at Turku. A traditionally fierce derby between Inter and TPS.

This is a likely massive market mover today as all bookies have not done their homework, at the time I write this asians have not yet opened.

Planning to open this up in more detail later, but it is very surprising that this is a surprise outside Finland as the situation of the teams is well known and widely broadcasted.

Anyway, if you still find someone offering odds above 2 for Inter at your local, or TPS not to score or something similar do not hesitate to place your bet.

FIN local bookie Veikkaus price Inter now at 1.30, and for a good reason.

Edit: asians finally opening. Hope you were not laying Inter at even odds at Betfair.

And the reason for this?

Simply put it is all down to TPS terrible financial situation after a poor season of 2013 when all the risks took materialized.

And the correct odds?

Difficult to say. -1.75 hc looks correct, rather -2 than -1.5, but as Inter are no world beaters either and they have a couple of questionable test guys I would not go any higher. It can turn into a 6-0 beating if the TPS kids respect seasoned Inter players too much, but if they dont a 2,3-0 looks like the likeliest outcome.

Changed format since last season. Matches in general indoors, except the ones at Turku as their indoor arena collapsed in the winter storm 2013. Unfortunately for Turku clubs TPS and Inter it is not the only problem they are facing but more about that perhaps later. Times +2 GMT.

New clubs since 2013 are JJK who got relegated from Veikkausliiga, HIFK and Jazz. KooTeePee will change their name to KTP as they submerge with the other team from Kotka. SJK was the winner last season and OPS and AC Kajaani were relegated to Kakkonen.

2013 Veikkausliiga rankings by some local media

Re-post from April. In the end HJK won comfortably, Honka were the runners-up and VPS took third place. The relegated team was JJK so the final table did look a lot different than what was predicted - and in general all of these rankings made sense. There were late and excellent signings at Honka whereas TPS and JJK were hit by injury crisis early on. VPS 3rd place speaks volumes of how badly all the rest of the clubs fared. In this league it takes only a few key injuries as the player material is very thin and clubs are financially weak. Final table 2013
