HJK – Inter Turku preview

Top-clash at a smaller than usual home pitch for HJK

HJK has to host Inter Turku at neighbouring Pallokenttä instead of their usual home ground Finnair Stadium because of the new grass that has been installed for the Women EURO 2009 to be held in Finland later this summer. The difference is that now they have to play on natural grass instead of artificial grass that they have for years, and also there is room for only some 3000 spectators. Good news is that the game will be sold out.

HJK have not played in the League since 31.5 when they lost away at RoPS, but they played a friendly against Honka and lost 1-2. Inter has had a similar break, they beat Honka in the League 1.6. 2-1 at home, and then played a friendly in Stockholm winning against AIK 0-2. The match-fitness is a questionmark for both teams.

Antti Muurinen
, the head coach of HJK is not afraid, but respects Inter:” They have excellent individual players and we have to beat them as a team. The replacements for Hooiveld and Chatto who were last season´s best players and left for Sweden to play are learning their way sooner than expected and Inter is a serious title-contender also this year even though most experts did not think so.”

There are some injury worries for HJK as important captain Tuomas Haapala 5/0 is doubful, like his replacements Ville Taulo 4/0 and Cheyne Fowler 1/0 in the anchoring role. Paulus Roiha will be out for sure.

Severi Paajanen, Inter midfielder admits that the statistics are on the home side but adds:” the meaning is to make them look better after this game.” Inter coach Job Dragtsma is happy that the match is played on natural grass;” We never liked the artifical grass, so this is a good chance to show what we can do.”

Mika Ojala is the only absentee for Inter, otherwise Dragtsma has a full squad at his disposal.

Weather is sunny and hot today here in Helsinki and all the elements for a good show are in the air. There is more stuff at Nordic Football Info, as there usualy is.

Haka - Jaro preview

Factory´s pitch welcomes surprise package FF Jaro

Haka: 3-3-3-3-0-3
Jaro: 0-3-0-3-3-1

”I believe there will be goals”, says Haka coach and ex-national team goalkeeper Olli Huttunen. ”Now that both teams have scored quite a lot there is no reason not to do it also on Sunday. The purpose of course is to be one step ahead of Jaro on everything we do, but I am sure Mika Laurikainen, the coach of Jaro, will disagree with me here”. Haka leading goal-scorer Pietari Holopainen 9/5 is doubtful, but his place as a left defender was brilliantly replaced by Markus Joenmäki.

Jaro has improved a lot since last season and it is nowadays a team that has to be taken seriously both home and away. Mikko Hyyrynen and young Sebastian Mannström are on fire, and Jani Tanska has been a very solid central defender. Jonas Portin 9/0 is doubtful, and is soon heading to start his new career at Ascoli.

I see good chances for Jaro here, they are perhaps the best counter-attacking team in the League when full squad is available, and being an underdog suits them perfectly.

RoPS – Honka preview

Honka is searching for more points from trip to Lapland

Honka head coach Mika Lehkosuo sees RoPS as a team that can surprise anyone; ” They have very skillful players who are capable of surprising things on the pitch, the problem has been the lack of discipline and organizing the game.”

Honka won KuPS at home on Wednesday on their newly renovated home pitch, but this will be a totally different affair as the pitch at Rovaniemi is not in that good condition, and it does not support the Honka style of play, in which the ball is kept on ground on the ground and the passes are short quick.

None of the four players from the EURO U21 were in starting eleven against KuPS, and Lehkosuo hints that maybe there are not that many changes in the opening line-up against RoPS; ”We will see who will start. The players on the pitch last time made themselves and me proud. It is a good thing to have more rested players along.”

RoPS had a good performance in their game at Turku against TPS and led the match twice, only to lose 3-2 by a second-half goal. ”It was a good game fro us, a big improvement from the previous match against TamU. We are happy to take on Honka”, says coach Mika Lumijärvi.

Honka has no injury worries except Paatelainen who has not played at all the whole season and Weckström 6/1, who broke his collarbone earlier this season. He is easily replaced by young talent Schüller.

RoPS injury list is also short, only Tenkula 0/0 and Turpeenniemi 6/0 will miss the game for sure, player-coach Saileti might rest.

It is true that RoPS won HJK at home, but on the other hand HJK was in the middle of a lot of games, it was the last one in the row before the summer break and now RoPS has a far more important game in their sight when they meet JJK in the relegation battle. This should help Honka enough to win here, but "comfortably" is not likely the word.

FC Lahti – Tampere United preview

Is TamU going to repeat the 5-0 League Cup thrashing?

Lahti is going through a bad period at the moment and the last win 17th of May home win against Jaro. There is something missing in their style of play, and not even the Return of the King Jari Litmanen has helped them lately. They lost to Haka away 3-0 this week after controlling the first half, but the second one was Haka´s and Lahti lost their grip after the first goal.

Lahti has a full squad to choose from except Jukka Veltheim who will be out for the rest of season.

Tampere United is under-achieving a second year in a row, but the results are a bit misleading as the performances on the pitch are far better than the results. The lack of goals is what separetes TamU from the top teams and especially the strikers have found it hard to score, even from the penalty spot. TamU has missed already two penalty kicks this season.

TamU is also riddled with injuries. The newest victim is playmaker Antti Pohja 7/1, but the head coach Ari Hjelm is not worried: ” The most important thing is to get 11 healthy players on the pitch, that is enough as we have young players on the bench to help when needed.”

The game is played on Saturday night, which is not a traditonal time in the Veikkausliiga but should attract more spectators and better atmosphere on the pitch. The game is not exactly a derby, but could turn into a very heated and passionate affair.

TPS - MYPA preview

MYPA trying to stop goal-hungry TPS

TPS will field again gk Lehtovaara 10/0 and mf Hämäläinen 10/0 after their arrival from the EURO U21.

Home team head coach Pasi Rautiainen has used a lot of rotation, and on Saturday he has the full squad to pick from now when important mf Ääritalo 1/0 is recovering to full match-fitness after a serious injury last season. Ääritalo brings speed and cleverness into the team, as well as goals.

”MYPA is a team that needs to be taken seriously”, says mf Kasper Hämäläinen, ” we have not won them for some time. They have some good foreign players and experienced defense.”

Last season MYPA had slightly the advantage in the mutual games after drawing 0-0 at Turku and winning 1-0 at home. This pre-season they played a friendly on a neutral venue and drew 1-1. ”We need to concentrate to play well together as a team”, says MYPA head coach Janne Lindberg. ”TPS has scored a lot of goals lately and we need to stop them, especially now that we will miss our own playmaker Ady due injury (9/2).”

The weather at Turku is hot, and there is a warm welcome to be expected by the goal-thirsty home supporters. The match is played on a Saturday night and all the elements are there for a heated game. Scoring goals might be a bit difficult if we believe Lindberg :”We need to defend tight and remember at all times that we are the away team, but when the time is right, we must strike fast.”

All about scoring goals

Some teams and players are more professional than others. That is the way it has always been. Finland U21 played well in Sweden, but did not score, and defended set pieces badly. Lack of routine, nothing else. Not enough CL-games under their belts.

Thank you anyway lads and good luck in the future, they were really good performances and I am sure you will be personally rewarded in form of better contracts.

Goodbye Jukka Raitala and Tuomo Turunen, you are hardly coming back to Veikkausliiga after these apperances. Time to Ville Koskimaa at Honka to improve his act as a central defender now, HJK can not replace Raitala and will struggle at left hugely from now on. Life, after all, is not entirely dancing on the roses.

VPS - JJK preview

Can JJK continue on winning ways?

VPS form: 0-0-3-3-3-3

JJK form: 1-1-0-0-0-3

VPS have been unbeatable after their latest coach change and people wonder how it long it will last as the team itself is a mediocre one and should not be fighting of the tops spots. The players who under-achieved the season have lately been over-achieving, maybe the balance is to be found soon?

Last week they were playing another relegation candidate KuPS, and won them at home 1-0 after somewhat disappointing performance. ” I am happy with the over-all team spirit though, and we have changed the style of from long balls and taken more short passes and mover better and worked harder” , says playmaker young Petteri Forsell, one of the sensations of new VPS. ”Everyone woke up and now we are tough to beat, only the KuPS match was poor from us, but we are trusting ourselves now.”

VPS has a full squad to choose from, apart from long-term absentees.

JJK won their first Veikkausliiga game ever last week when beating Lahti 2-1 at home in Jyväskylä and now when the spirits are high Vaasa is a good place to travel to. The distance is not that big, and there are 3 ex-VPS players wearing the JJK-shirt now, and also JJK-coach Ville Priha is a former VPS legend. The JJK team is warmly welcomed, and quality-wise there is not a big difference in class, or in the style of play as both teams are more physical than skillful. These teams have never met before in an official match which makes it all the more interesting. The weather is excellent at the moment and all the junior players taking part in a tournament are also invited and a full stadion with loads of thirsty spectators is a possibility.

JJK have no major absentees either.

Haka - Lahti preview

Going down down, down..?

Haka has been the surprise package of the season so far, but the performances have not been anything marvellous, only efficient enough and they have understood of the importance of winning games ugly. Most important thing is to gain the three points, then success will follow. Last season Haka was on the edge of going bankrupt but a local businessman Sedu Koskinen took over and has promised to turn the things around. At first he was laughed at, not only he promised to buy some handsome players into the team to attract female spectators, but lately there has been only a little of critizism as Haka leads the table. Haka has full squad to pick from, but Viljanen 7/0 is doubtful due the EURO U21-trip. ”We have no need to be afraid of anyone anymore”, says Haka goalkeeper Janne Korhonen, ” but it is interesting to see what my last season´s team mate Fofana can do, and Rafael is always one of the most dangerous strikers in the League.”

Lahti started also well, but lately the results have been alarming. They definitely should have won MIFK at home, but only came close by hitting the woodwork several times and they gave the win away on a last-minute equaliser. Three days later at Jyväskylä they became the first victim ever of JJK, who then got their historical win in the Veikkausliiga. Jari Litmanen is always the biggest target for attraction, and he should again be fit to play and will probably get substituted into the second half. On the rumour mill there have talks of mf Konsta Hietanen getting a transfer to Slovakian Zilina, but it is yet to be confirmed.

FC Honka - KuPS preview

Return to home ground Tapiolan Urheilupuisto

Honka form:1-1-0-3-3-0

KuPS form: 0-0-0-0-0-0

Honka plays now their first real home game of the season as their renovated home ground is open for football again. The first 3 home games were played at neighbouring HJK home stadium and the success was bad both in the league and from an economical point of view as the home supporters did not show up.

Honka has had a longer summer break than most because they had four players (Turunen 9/1, Otaru 10/2, Vasara 10/0 and Kokko 7/0) in the EURO U 21 – games and did not take part in the league at all. The only match played was a friendly against HJK which they won 1-2. The four players mentioned are probably not playing against KuPS as there are still several good players available and they are not absolutely needed. Honka met KuPS last time in January and the KuPS players will surely remember that 7-0 thrashing.

KuPS are still in the same trouble where they have been all season. They can not score, but let the opposition team to score in every game. No wonder they decided to change coaching staff, and the last round´s game away at VPS was slightly better both result–wise and by the performance though they collected no points and lost 1-0. The new manager Esa Pekonen is now a week wiser and knows what the problem is. Unfortunately for him it is the lack of good player material with skills.

Two young KuPS players are heading permanently to FC Twente, Holland. Petteri Pennanen has already been there on loan all season, but now also 18-year old mf Tuomas Rannankari 11/0 is off and that makes the situation of KuPS even worse, they will probably need to promote some more players from their youth team.

H2H 6-2-1, last game January in the league cup, 7-0 for Honka.

FF Jaro - IFK Mariehamn preview

Swedish-speaking ”derby” at Pietarsaari

Jaro form:0-3-0-3-3-3
MIFK form:1-1-3-3-1-3

Both teams have started the season surprisingly well, but deserve to be in top -5.

FF Jaro has won their three last games including a 0-5 win in the cup against minnows Tervarit, and looking forward to host the islanders. Jaro will be without importants defender Aho (7/0) and perhaps also Jonas Portin 9/0 who is returning from the EURO U21 in Sweden, only to pack his pack and move to Ascoli to join the Serie B team.

In the last game Jaro demolished RoPS, and the team spirits are high despite the fact they are looking for replacements for Aho and Portin. Jaro has been second best in the attack in the league after FC Honka, but they have also conceded a lot of goals.

MIFK had a good week last week, when they snatched a point with a last-minute goal at Lahti and also held on to a 2-1 victory against serie leaders Haka. The win came with a price as top striker Arsim Gashi (11/1) got a yellow card and will be suspended from this game. MIFK games average a lot less goals than those of Jaro, and this game can be described as aattack vs. Defense.

MIFK gets gk Ochieng back from international duty, he has not played in this season´s team yet because of an awful injury last year but is now back in match fitness.

TPS - RoPS preview

TPS needs to improve home performances

TPS form from the right: 3-0-3-1-3-3
RoPS form from the right: 1-0-0-3-0-0

”We have been in control in all the home games, but have been a bit careless and unlucky in front of the goal”, says TPS playmaker Riku Riski, who got chosen into the Veikkausliiga all-stars starting 11 of May. ” Fortunately away against Lahti and KuPS also we succeeded properly in scoring goals and hopefully that form continues also at the home stadium Veritas when we meet out-of-form RoPS, in the league our position is good, we are only four points behind leaders Haka.

TPS welcomes back gk Jukka Lehtovaara (10/0) and mf Kasper Hämäläinen (10/0) from the EURO U21-tournament in Sweden, but they are unlikely to start. In the last match in the cup they were not needed when TPS took an easy way victory 1-6 against a lower-division opponent and cruised through 6th round. The match served well to keep up match fitness during the short summer break.

RoPS has struggled both home and away and they have only one win, but that was the most wanted scalp of all, the mighty HJK Helsinki. ” It shows that after all the League is quite even and anyone can beat anyone, though so far RoPS have not managed to get that many points.” Riski continues, ” the Rovaniemi outfit always have so many foreigners and new players in the team that it takes time to find their play, but it could happen any day now.”

RoPS last league game was played away at Tampere United, and the final score 3-1 loss shows that RoPS is still shy at travels.

TPS have pretty much full squad, Syväjärvi (8/0)and Simwanza(8/0) from the Rovaniemi side will miss the game due suspension, Turpeenniemi (6/0) is doubtful due injury.

Bottom-7 teams are poor indeed. JBK is coached by legend Aleksei Eremenko Sr, I am not sure if he occasionally plays a game or two.

JJK - Fc Lahti preview

1x2 % 18.0% - 28.0% - 54.0% (5.56 - 3.57 - 1.85)

First home win still awaits

In the whole glorious history of Finnish football these two teams have met only once, and this historical event in a a league cup game in march in Lahti ended with a 1-0 win for home team. Is it time for revenge now?

JJK form is embarrassingly bad, the newly promoted team has yet to win a game, but fortunately from their point of view Lahti has not been that much better result-wise in their last outings winning only once in their last six games against FF Jaro. In case of Jyväskylä the question could also be formed "is JJK really that bad?" We know Lahti is not.

In the Cup JJK won an out-of-league opponent 0-8, but one should read absolutely nothing into that because the opposition was extremely poor. Scoring goals have been a problem, but not the only one as also the defense has been a bit shaky and the team from the Mid-Finland also lacks skill creating chances.

There is a huge home support to be expected as the away team has the biggest Finnish footballer ever in their line-up as Jari Litmanen (Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona) decided to return to his beloved home town after some 15 years of international top class football.

Fc Lahti hosted IFK Mariehamn last Sunday, and undeservedly had to settle to a draw, Lahti had lots of goal chances and the talismanic striker Rafael hit the cross-bar twice, scoring only once.

Jari Litmanen is fit and will probably play the second half of the game.

That is numbers, and only numbers.

My gut-feeling is that JJK is even less likely to win. True, there will be best home support so far, and Lahti is a vulnerable team. They all are.

The skill difference in creating goal chances is very big though, and with Shala & Rafael possessing scoring instinct it all favours Lahti so much that at the end of the day this should be quite an easy away win, despite the animal-like efforts of the home team. Lahti will score at least two goals, and that is enough for struggling JJK.

End of goal drought for TamU?

Tampere United was one the favourites for the title but their season has been quite rocky so far and they find themselves at the 11th spot. The performances have not been bad, but they have been awfully inefficient in front of the goal, and also it is honest to say that they have been unlucky. There have been storms in the background too with the management of the team, but everything is calming down now and they can concentrate on the game again. The important thing.

TamU head coach Ari Hjelm warns about the visiting RoPS from the very north, ” it is very international team, full of artists, good individual players and skill. On a good day they can beat anyone, like their last home game shows when they won HJK 1-0.”

RoPS is only 12th in the league and they have already sacked coach Bondarenko and replaced him with a Finnish-Sambian duo of Lumijärvi and a Lapland legend Saileti. It might have helped, as the biggest title-contenders HJK had to settle to a 1-0 away loss at Rovaniemi last time around. ”There is a lot to do, we need to minimize the amount of mistakes made. Partly they have happened because there have lots of injuries and suspensions, but we have to change the poor away record sooner or later and can not respect TamU too much.” Says Jorma Turpeenniemi from the Lappish side.

The only important missing now is defender Janne Turpeenniemi as very important goal-scorer Nchimunya Mweetwa - Drogba as they call him at Rovaniemi - is slowly regaining full match-fitness.

IFK Mariehamn - Haka Valkeakoski preview

1x2 % 42.0% - 30.0% - 28.0% (2.38 - 3.33 - 3.57)

Time for the Haka bubble to burst?

The Islanders challenge the current League leaders Haka from Valkeakoski. 4th placed MIFK has not yet lost home, but was lucky in their last away game at Lahti when they undeservedly equalised on the extra time by a nice shot from Tamas Gruborovics. ” I am not at all happy with the performance, but it is always nice to get some result even if you play badly”, admits home side head coach Pekka Lyyski. ”Fortunately we tend to play much better at home and will give Haka a good match, and probably we are even closer to the top after Wednesday´s game.

IFK Mariehamn injury list is shortish; Dmytro Voloshyn, Dmytro Pronevych and Peter Blomberg are out for sure, and the other goalkeeper Willis Ochieng is on Kenyan international duty.

Haka are the surprise leaders of the league. Very little was expected from them before the season and so far the results are slighly favouring the side from Valkeakoski, the strikers have huge problems scoring and the best goal-scorer in the beginning of the season has been a defender with five goals, mostly from set pieces. ” It is not going to be easy”, know Haka head coach Olli Huttunen, a former national team goalkeeper, ” but we know how to deal with a physically strong side like MIFK. All we need to is trust our own style of play, the skill and speed”.

In the Finland Cup Haka beat Tigers from Tampere easily 7-0 the spirits are high. IFK Mariehamn did not take part in the Cup at all.

Betting analysis:

Let us face it, Haka is not a good team and should not be on top. In my ranking both teams are about equal at C-class which leads easily to the conclusion that MIFK is a favourite here. However, I have to into account the fact that Haka is leading and there is a positive atmosphere in the team and give them some credit.

Haka is not going to score in set pieces at Mariehamn, and as the strikers Ikävalko and... - is there someone else - have been almost useless I see MIFK dnb at 1.80 as excellent value.

VPS - KuPS preview 17.6.2009

VPS - KuPS 1x2 % 50.0% - 30.0% - 20.0% (2.00 - 3.33 - 5.00)

KuPS sacked their manager Kai Nyyssönen and replaced him with Esa Pekonen, a former NT player and also as former manager of KuPS, who knows well the organization and has been lately worked as a sports director of KuPS. Not much was expected of the KuPS team this season but the bad performances and results finally seemed to be too bad for the board and the new manager takes over only one day before the tricky away trip to Vaasa.

The home side has won their last three games and away team has lost five a row even without scoring, but the head coach of VPS Petri Vuorinen is not expecting a walk in the park;” We know exactly how they feel now because we had the same situation only a couple of rounds ago. There are no easy games in this League”, he reminds us.

During the break the players have taken it a bit easier and they had full five days off after the easy 0-5 away win in the Cup, but now they are back in training with happy faces and eager to take on their visitors. There are no serious injuries, and some of the players have kept on their match fitness playing with the reserve team VPS-j.

The away team KuPS are physically in good condition, but the bad start has left them a lot to wish for mentally. ”We are fit”, says the assistant manager Harri Ylönen of the KuPS, ” and tuesday night we have to work on with the mental issues and find the fighting spirit, we are bot as bad as the results might suggest”.

KuPS only important injury is midfielder Miikka Turunen who hurt his hand last week,
otherwise the full squad is available.

Pick and betting analysis to be published tomorrow.

VPS -0.50 : KuPS 0.50 50.0% - 50.0% (2.00 - 2.00)
VPS 0.25 : KuPS 0.25 60.7% - 39.3% (1.65 - 2.54)
VPS 0 : KuPS 0 71.4% - 28.6% (1.40 - 3.50)
VPS 0.25 : KuPS -0.25 75.7% - 24.3% (1.32 - 4.12)
VPS 0.50 : KuPS -0.5 80.0% - 20.0% (1.25 - 5.00)

My estimations are strongly suggesting that any KuPS bet would be good. They have a new manager and there is only half a class of quality difference. Yet, I do not feel like taking anything here. Fortunately there is no hurry, KuPS prices are not going to be slashed any time soon because of their position in the league and lack of form so there is time to think about it. Definitely no VPS bets tonight!

Veikkausliiga previews

Looks like I am going to start publishing match-day previews of Veikkausliiga matches, starting 17.6.2009.

There will be latest news, probable line-ups and a look at the best betting picks available.

Some Ykkönen games will be covered too occasionally.

Until Wedndesday then, fortunately there is also live football from Euro 2009 U21 Sweden tonight when Finland meets England.

Tomorrow my rough plan for live entertainment lies on a friendly between HJK and Honka at Tali 12.00 CET.

Early asian odds for Veikkausliiga below.

A beautiful End to a football team

My team is finished. We ran out of players, fresh legs, guys without obligations with family and kids, motivation. Instead we have now mortgages we cant afford to pay, crying kids, ex-wives, big beer bellies, broken ankles and thrashed knees.

We decided to make an end to the suffering out team had endured for the last years, not getting enough players to the matches. End to the endless losing and trying to lure in new blood.

It was some 20 years, no one remembers exactly when we started, and in our glory days some 10 years we were quite a good amateur 5vs5 side. Special remark has to be given to the fact that always everyone has played and there has never been a single training session.

Matches and tournaments only. And fun.

Now it is all gone, the jerseys below are doing their last service for us in a lovely bonfire.

R.I.P our team, Time goes by.

7.6.2009

9 games a week

This week I was at the stadion or by the pitch nine times watching live football. It is not too much, but I feel exhausted and deserve a break tomorrow. Time to go cycling, wandering in the forest with the dog and enjoying life.

Charging batteries tomorrow then, see you later.

5.6.2009

There is always something to watch here!

Helsinki is a good place to live for many reasons, one of them is that there are about 30 local football teams that are also in offer in the Big Betting World.

One might think this is a quiet day, but fortunately we have Kakkonen!

LOHKO B all times local, + 2 gmt.

FC Jazz-j - P-Iirot klo 18.30

Jazz are having both scoring and injury problems, away team is a 50 % favourite. Away win.

FC Espoo - KaaPo klo 18.30

My pick of the day for live entertainment. Espoo has started surprisingly well, but the difference in quality favours the visitors. Away win.

Sinimustat - EIF klo 18.30

Sinimustat are getting no help from Inter Turku, as they are on a well-deserved holiday and a break from the league. Prince Otoo is coming back to help Sinimustat. EIF is too strange team for me at the moment that I do not want to guess what will happen here. Maybe everything is not possible, but for me a no bet definitely.

ÅIFK - Pirkkala JK klo 19.30

Mika Ääritalo will feature as he is coming back from serious injury. The TPS player is probably fit enough to be the decisive factor here. Home win.

LOHKO C

OPS-jp - FC Santa Claus klo 18.30

Northern group, Oulu meets Rovaniemi, I am sure you did guess that Santa Claus is from there? Home team is too big, too oriented for promotion to give the team from Southern Lapland any chances. Home win.

Last night I was watching Pallohonka to cruise through 5th round of Finnish Cup with a clear 0-5 victory over 4th division MasKi. To my disappointment the bookies were too scared to take any bets from me. Shame on you! Get out of the sauna if you can not stand the heat!

Tomorrow I will be busy with U21 Finland - Belarus at 13.00 CET and senior team Finland - Liechtenstein at 18.00 CET, most likely no updates until Sunday. Happy weekend, hope your teams win, unless you are a Swede of course.

4.6.2009

Another quiet and rainy day

Why not give some latest team news? Finland U21 goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky from Esbjerg has been found to be injured and will miss the EURO2009. UEFA has not yet approved his withdrawal but it is a matter of time, and he will be replaced by...?

EDIT: 9.6 it was announced that Jon Masalin from Norwegian Adecco-liga team Ham-Kam will be replacing unlucky Hradecky. Jaakkola will be the first choice unless something unexpected happens.

Already two goalies out of the Games, as Tomi Maanoja (AIK) has been out for all of the season due injury.

Finland will meet Belorussia on Saturday at Valkeakoski 13.00 CET in a friendly. I will naturally be there to follow what can be expected from the sides later this month.

Senior national team will host Liechtenstein on Saturday at 18.00 CET and Russia nxt Wednesday 19.30. Nothing new from that front.

IFK Mariehamn met Atletico Madrid in a friendly arranged by the local bookie PAF. Full attendance at the small and cosy Wiklöf Arena and an away win. No surprise really I guess. Too far away for me to go for fun and I also missed the paf-stream coz i preferred Finnish Cup Pöxyt - GrIFK. There is something seriously wrong with me.

3.6.2009

In offer tonight; Finnish Cup

I guess it is round 5 now. Or round 6. This ignorance of mine reflects very well with the common interest of the cup. No one knows, no one cares. There would be no results published unless there were some underground volunteers who have started a site that follows Finnish Cup.

Pathetic a bit?

The Finnish Football Association could not care less themselves, but they are the first to point their fingers at any club who says they are not interested.

If the quality differences were not that big when you meet someone from a division or two lower than where you usually play there would be far more upsets, unfortunately most divisions are just full of amateurs and they would struggle scoring in an empty net.

I am going to watch a Cup match tonight. (And tomorrow as I am kind of a freak) I am one of the few who knows there is a such a game played, but after all I am well connected!

Honka A (u19) will host Veikkausliiga side KuPS, and naturally as there is no chance to find out at this stage who is playing I am expecting a far more difficult game for KuPS from this than it should traditionally be. KuPs might want to go out of the cup and concentrate on not being relegated from Veikkausliiga, and Honka U19 is not that far from being at least a division two side.

Edit: I just received some very interesting info regarding this game... I would love to spill it out but need to make some big bets first, if someone just dared to publish their odds!

Edit: FT 2-3. KuPs was mostly a youth team too as announced.

Last night 3rd div Pöxyt won 2nd Div GrIFK 4-0. (Congrats Petri G!)

Prediction 1-2 FT and 16 spectators, including me. Maybe I should take my dog along and make it 17?

Tomorrow there is another Honka team in action when MasKi from nearby Masala hosts 2nd div Pallohonka, the original reserve team for Veikkausliiga side FC Honka.

June; the best pitches and the smallest number of games

This is the reality of the Veikkausliiga of Finland. Now when we kicked-off the season and pitches are green while sun is warming up the people and their happy faces we are facing a situation when there are no games left to watch.

Veikkausliiga takes a summer break.

There is always an excuse to do that and I admit this season is very exceptional with the EURO U21 in Sweden starting soon, but the another frequently used excuse I can not accept.

"We can not play in the summer because the audience-to-be is digging dirt at their summer cottages."

Wake up! Those people are not coming through the gates anyway. There is no need for 100 % attendace in the cities to fill the stadia if the game is entertaining and the conditions are on an acceptable level.

Knowing when the round is played would also be helpful.

WOMEN EURO 2009 in Finland is also making things more difficult for clubs in here because the pitches all all reserved to them, even before a single footballing woman lands at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.

This leads to another problem;

where is my team playing this round, now that I have found out when the round is?

Everything is not down to marketing and managament, but a lot is. There is a lot of waking up to do.

For your information dear reader, may I introduce you the next round!

13.6. KuPS - MYPA at 16.00

14.6. Jaro - RoPS at 18.30
FC Lahti - IFK M:hamn at 19.00
