Turku - the football capital of Finland?

Personally I do not like at all the fact the at the moment the questionmark could be withdrawn. Unfortunately the facts speak for themselves now, let us take a look why.

Inter Turku is the reigning champion. For the first time in their short history of existence and with a bang after leading the league from the start to the finish. And with a style of play that made most other clubs envious.

TPS Turku was according to some experts the favourite before the season though it did not take long to notice that a lot of mistakes had been taken. The manager of the previous season - Mixu Paatelainen, now back at Hibs - had brought in players that suited his needs and understanding of football and the view of football of the next manager to come, the legendary Martti Kuusela could not have been more different.

TPS boasts the biggest budget and the profile players and again a new high-profile manager in Pasi Rautiainen and the derbies between TPS and Inter attract the biggest crowds in Finland.

Traditionally Helsinki has been the home for the biggest club HJK but they seem to have problems in identificating themselves and have lost ground to Turku.

Occasionally the champions have come from smaller towns supported by strong sponsors´s from the paper industry but times seem to changing.

Tampere still has also to prove themselves, there was big talk as TamU as the Rosenborg of Finland but now there has been only silece coming from Tampere.

Honka from Espoo is also talking big and planning a bright future. Time will tell.

Players worth scouting for

The hottest players on this list are naturally young players and because of the success of the U21 team the most talked-about players are from that team. It is widely expected that a chosen few will have a professional deal in Sweden or Norway after the U21 Euro finals in Sweden June-July 2009.

My chosen ones are at least these following young talents.

Juha Hakola, a winger from Flora Tallinn who is about to be transferred to Heracles Almelo in the Dutch Eredivision when the transfer window opens. Skilful player with leadership qualities. ---edit---Hakola made his debut 17.1.2009 and played the whole 90 minutes as a left winger. The game against Den Haag away ended with a 2-2 result.

Mika Ojala from the Champions Fc Inter Turku. He was chosen the midfieldplayer of the Year 2008. Transfermarkt.co.uk sets his price to around 1750.000 euros.

Tuomo Turunen an all-around though defensive player from the runners-up Fc Honka. Transfermarkt.co.uk sets his price to around 750.000 euros.

Nicholas Otaru unfortunately injured at the moment and recovering from an operation but Otaru from Fc Honka is hugely impressive work-horse in the midfield. 400.000.

Lauri Dalla Valle. One could say he has already been scouted as he plays with Fc Liverpool reserves but still unknown youngster who is provably the most promising talent ever, at least after Jari Litmanen some 20 years ago. Unknown.

Teemu Pukki is still waiting for his debut for Sevilla but it should not take long now. A striker with confidence. Unknown.

No list is complete without some surprises and my contribution here is Eetu Kokkinen from 2nd division Hyvinkään Palloseura. You will hear more of him in the seasons to come! Unknown.

Football - the national sport?

In most countries this is exactly the case but here in the land where the polar bears roam the streets the national game is unfortunately hockey on ice.

Ice hockey, of all games! Violence on ice! Hockey fighting! It is hard to love if you are into the chess of the grass, the game of the kings.

The image of football is somewhat grim. The players, managers and clubs are not that well appreciated. All clubs do not yet have stadiums designed for football, nor enough facilities, lights or a fan culture.

There is something bubbling under however. There are some pioneers in most of the cities where football is played and are ready to improve the status and make the changes needed.

Eventually everything will get better. Not today, hopefully tomorrow?

Why is is so difficult to predict Finnish League games?

Is it?

About Asian Handicaps

There is a lot to talk about or to find out about Asian Handicaps though the basic principles are pretty simple. Let us take a look at the most common types of A /HC.

With Asian Handicap betting you eliminate the possibility of a draw in a soccer game. The underdog will be given a head start of a handicap, and the favourite will be handicapped by the same handicap. The predetermined number of handicap will be added to the real number of goals and make up the right bet.

Asian Handicap advantage compared to fixed odds

The possibility of a draw result is being eliminitated, increasing the winning chance from 33,3 percent to 50 percent in a single game. If a quarter handicap game ends with a draw, and you fail to win your bet, you only lose half of your stake. Depending on the handicap you can win your bet even if the team you bet on don't win the game. You can bet on a team you believe will lose the game, but because of a big handicap you can still win the bet. Typical here is when the favorite team win the game with only one goal and you have taken the underdog with +1.5 handicap.
You win!

0:0 Handicap

If there are no favourite the handicap will be set to 0:0.There will not be given a head start of a handicap for any team. No handicap will be added to the real number of goals.

Arsenal v Manchester Utd 1.90 0:0 1.95

If you bet on Arsenal you will win your bet if Arsenal win the match. If you bet on Manchester Utd you will win your bet if Manchester Utd win the match. If the game ends with a draw you will get your original stake back.

How much money do you get if you win your bet ?

Winning = Stake x odds. For example stake 100 x 1.90 (Arsenal) = 190
Net Winning (profit) = Winning - Stake. 190-100 = 90.

If you lose your bet you lose your stake = 100.

1/4 Handicap

When there is a 1/4 handicap special rules come into play if the game ends in a draw, you win half of what you could have won or you lose only half your stake.

Arsenal v Tottenham 1.90 0:1/4 1.95

It reads like this : "Arsenal giving 1/4 ball to Tottenham" This means that Tottenham have a 1/4 ball advantage when the game starts. If you bet on Arsenal you will win your bet if Arsenal win the game. If you bet on Tottenham you will win your bet if Tottenham win the game.

If the game ends in a draw, you will lose half if you bet on Arsenal. If you bet on Tottenham you will win half.

How much money do you get if you win your bet ?
Suppose Arsenal wins then,
Winning = Stake x odds.

For example 100 x 1.90 (Arsenal odds, your choice) = 190.

Net Winning (profit) = Winning - Stake. 190-90 = 100.

If you lose your bet you lose your stake. The whole of it. Same bet, but Tottenham wins. Yuo lose your stake = 100.

What happens if the game ends with a draw ? Now we have two possible outcomes.

If you bet on Tottenham you win 50 % of a full net winning, called 'win 1/2'
If you bet on Arsenal you lose 50 % of the stake, called 'loss 1/2'

How much money do you get if you 1/2 win your bet ?

Net Winning = (Winning - Stake) / 2. (190-100) / 2 = 45.

How much money do you get if you 1/2 lose your bet?
You lose your stake / 2. 100/2 = 50.

1/2 Handicap
When a team has got a 1/2 goal start, you will either lose or win. A draw results is impossible.

Arsenal v Aston Villa 1.90 0:1/2 1.95

You can read this like : "Arsenal giving 1/2 ball to Aston Villa". This means that Aston Villa has a 1/2 ball advantage when the game starts.

If you bet on Arsenal you will win your bet only if Arsenal wins, otherwise you will lose your stake. If you bet on Aston Villa you will win your bet if the game ends draw or Aston Villa wins the game.

3/4 Handicap
When there is a 3/4 handicap special rules come into play if the game ends in with a one goal victory for the favourite, you win half of what you could have won or you lose only half your stake.

Arsenal v Newcastle 1.90 0:3/4 1.95

You can read this like : "Arsenal giving 3/4 ball to Newcastle". This means that Newcastle have a 3/4 ball advantage when the game starts.

If you bet on Arsenal you will win your bet if Arsenal win the game by two goals or more. If you bet on Newcastle you will win your bet if the game ends draw or Newcastle win the game.

If the game ends with a 1 goal victory to Arsenal, you will win half of your stake if you bet on Arsenal. You will lose half of your stake if you bet on Newcastle.

What happens if the game ends with a one goal victory ?
If you bet on Arsenl you win 50 % of a full net winning, called "win 1/2".
If you bet on Newcastle you 50 % of the stake, called "loss 1/2"

0:1 Handicap
When a team has given a head start of 1 goal handicap special rules will be added if the favourite team wins by 1 goal. A draw is not permitted in Asian Handicap, and this is a 'no bet' situation.

Arsenal v Everton 1.90 0:1 1.95

You can read this like : "Arsenal giving 1 ball to Everton". This means that Everton has a 1 ball advantage when the game starts.

If you bet on Arsenal you will win your bet if Arsenal win the game by two goals or more. If you bet on Arsenal and the game ends with a 1 goal victory to Arsenal, you will you get you stake back. If you bet on Everton you will win your bet if the game ends draw or Everton wins the game. If you bet on Everton and the game ends with a 1 goal victory to Arsenal, you will you get you stake back. Easy?

The 5 worst Premiership players ever

There's a lot of money being splashed around the Premiership these days, and most of it on foreign players. In most cases, managers know who they are signing, but in the first fledgling years of the Premiership, it could have been anyone. Here's my top 5 Premiership flops...

5. Bosko Balaban: What the heck happened here? He waltzes in for what at the time sounded like a massive transfer fee (I know 6m isn't much any more), scores the grand sum of absolutely nothing and waltzes out. What a load of rubbish. Was John Gregory in charge at the time? Ahhhhhh, now that might explain something.

4. Tomas Brolin: What makes this story so sad is that Brolin came with a huge reputation, having never put a foot wrong. When he put a foot on English soil, however, everything started to go pear-shaped, including Brolin himself who ballooned in size. He cost Leeds 4.5m which in those days was a lot of money, and George Graham shipped him out after just 19 games. Crystal Palace gave him a crack but when Brolin was found upside down in a dustbin outside Burger King, even they got shot of him. That last bit may or may not be true.

3. Steve Marlet: Marlet was never really that bad - it was just the 11.5m price tag that turned a few heads and got people thinking "Hey - have Fulham really found a decent player here?" No they blood hadn't! He was worth about 1.5m, but Al Fayed wasn't thinking straight and mucked the cheque up. Marlet came, played a little, left little impression - and left.

2. Jean-Alain Boumsong: This must be a joke, yes? Jean-Alain Boumsong, so bad that he looks like his manager has made him sit in a swivel chair, rotated him 100 times and sent him out onto the pitch for a dare, signs for Juventus? After being rotten for Newcastle 92 minutes out of 90 every week? This is amazing.

1. Ali Dia: So funny that the story of Ali Dia should be incorporated in the National Anthem, and serves as a stark reminder to any club chairman that hiring Graeme Souness can be horribly, horribly bad for your club's health. It's strange to think that Souness kept walking into jobs even before this debacle, especially as he had mangled Liverpool beforehand. Ali Dia, to cut a long story short, was not the cousin of George Weah, but some scammer who convinced the aforementioned Scot that he was great. So without watching him play, Souness throws him on as a substitute, and then hauls him off. Hilarious.

Think you can find anyone worse than this load of rubbish? Give me a shout!

Finnish football league system 2009

It has been so elegantly and beautifully put in the wikipedia that I am not willing to copy it here but just to make it short about the main league which is called Veikkausliiga after the main sponsor Veikkaus (a bookie!);

There are 14 teams who play against each other twice, home and away, during the season which starts in April and ends when the cold and dark nights of October have arrived. Total amount of games is 26.

No playoffs, whoever gains most points will get the silverware. The 14th club will be relegated directly and 13th will face playoffs against the second best club of Ykkönen, which in turn is the second best league of the country and pretty much non-professional.

That is all I have to say about that, as Forrest Gump might say.

Finnish women´s national team

To be honest I do not know the international level of ladies football that well at the moment that I should talk about it all myself, but as there will be the EURO 2009 finanls in Finland at keast I have to create a possibility for you to comment on this if you feel like it.

In my understanding Finland ranks somewhere from 6th to 10th in Europe and a medal would be a pleasant, though not unlikely, surprise!

UEFA Women´s Euro 2009 in Finland

Finland will host the 2009 Women´s Euro Finals. As it is ladies we are talking about what difference does it make? Well, in Finland everything has something to do everything and this time there is a problem involved.

There are not enough stadiums and some Veikkausliiga teams have to adjust and move away and/or change the fixtures planned. The program for 2009 Veikkausliiga is still to be published.

UEFA also requires some other stadiums and training grounds to be booked exclusively to UEFA Women´s Euro 2009 which means more problems to the teams affected, mainly in Helsinki, Turku and Tampere in August 2009.

Anyway, welcome ladies!

Finnish national team

Finland has never made it to the final stages of any major events so far. A couple of times it has been painstakingly close but to be honest there is a gap in quality and quantity between Finland and the top European countries like Spain or Germany.

There are and have been some phenomenal players but usually finding a top-class player to every 11 spots in the starting eleven has been slightly too challenging.

At the moment the list of players who might make it to the team looks something like this;

Finnish national U21 team

Finland U21-team created a shocking surprise by qualifying to the UEFA U21 finals in Sweden 2009. Almost all the players of the team come from Veikkausliiga teams and there are hopes that their success would boost also the local League and attract some more audience.

The brightest stars of the team are yet to be known as some of them play also for the full national team but there are people who expect a lot from players like Roman Eremenko from Dynamo Kiev or the Hetemaj brothers who are in Greece at the moment.

If yuo feel like dismissing U21 players as youngsters then you better check out these names...

Finland is in a good company in the final 8! This information is from www.uefa.com

Derbies and rivalries in Finland

There is still room for development in the Finnish football culture. There are only a handful of fans but it is slowly getting there. Derby is and should be one of finest moments of the season and I am presenting you the most important ones at the time being.

HJK vc. Fc Honka is a derby as there are only some 7 km from the Finnair Stadium to Tapiolan Urheilupuisto. Honka also used to be the reserve team for some time in the history for HJK.
The relations nowadays are actually very good and many of the players and management of Honka have played also in HJK in the past. Not fierce but intense.

HJK and Fc Lahti have not love lost. This is closest to a game where some hooliganism would be most likely to happen.

Inter Turku and TPS Turku share the same stadion. Very cosy anyway.

Jaro and VPS are from the same region. Important game for both of them.

Haka Valkeakoski are situated some 30 km from the regions capital Tampere where United play.

Lahti and MyPa Myllykoski are regional neighbours.

Nothing really significant here, yet. The country is small and players like to get along with their colleagues also in the future.

Money, that is what they want

I want money too and it looks like not being a professional football player after all in Finland is not such a bad miss.

According to recent studies and budgets of the Veikkausliiga clubs I am able to share with you some facts which are sad but true.

A good football player in Finland earns roughly 50 000 euros a year. There was no zeros missing. Fifty thousand.

Somewhere else it is a decent sum of money but here it is just about enough to survive the daily life. Ok, maybe it is about the double or a third more that the average income, but there are no pensions waiting. No career after retirement. No glory, no fame, just bad knees.

No wonder everyone who just is good enough wants a transfer badly. Or another profession if they are not. Even Toni Lehtinen from Fc Haka who does not really fit into my description of a good footballer is said to earn to 80 000 a year in Greece.

The budget´s of the clubs range from 6 million to 1 million so Cristiano Ronaldo, if you fancy buying a club, please come here and take your pick. At the moment my recommendation with the price/quality ratio in mind would be Fc Honka.

Traditional teams!

The Veikkausliiga as it is today was grounded 1990 and teams in the 14 team League are below (table from wikipedia in Finnish);

While talking about tradition let´s check what were the first "original" 12 teams 1990 and how they are doing now.

Kuusysi was the champion then and for several years to come. Due to economical and other turmoils the club has no team anymore except with juniors under 20 years of age but a team called City Stars is following their footsteps and did get relegated to div III after season 2008. Unluckily and unfair but what can you do?

RoPS (2.), KuPS (3.) HJK (4.) TPS (6.) and Haka (8.) are still playing in Veikkausliiga but the rest of the teams of 1990 have either disappeared completely or been relegated to lower divisions. Reipas, Ilves, KPV, OTP, MP and Kumu, once they were warriors.

Veikkausliiga teams 2009:

Club City Home Stadium
Manager
FC Haka Valkeakoski Tehtaan kenttä Olli Huttunen
HJK Helsinki Finnair Stadium Antti Muurinen
FC Honka Espoo Tapiolan urheilupuisto Mika Lehkosuo
FC Inter Turku Veritas Stadion Job Dragtsma
FF Jaro Pietarsaari Pietarsaaren keskuskenttä Mika Laurikainen
JJK Jyväskylä Harjun stadion Ville Priha
KuPS Kuopio Magnum Areena Kai Nyyssönen
FC Lahti Lahti Lahden Stadion Ilkka Mäkelä
IFK Mariehamn Maarianhamina Wiklöf Holding Arena Pekka Lyyski
MyPa Kouvola Anjalankosken jalkapallostadion Janne Lindberg
RoPS Rovaniemi Rovaniemen keskuskenttä Valeri Bondarenko
Tampere United Tampere Ratinan stadion Ari Hjelm
TPS Turku Veritas Stadion Pasi Rautiainen
VPS Vaasa Hietalahden jalkapallostadion Tomi Kärkkäinen

What happened 2008? And why?

The Veikkausliiga was a most interesting competition last season. The surprise team FC Inter was leading from the start to the final round and kept their lead. First time Champions in their history and with a style being the best team in the country.

Fc Honka took silver with a solid performance and I can honestly say that it was more than justified. Two best teams in the country who believed in what they were doing, and two best managers respectively in Job Dragtsma and Mika Lehkosuo.

Bronze went also to a surprise team when Fc Lahti took also their 1st medal ever in the Veikkausliiga history, just like Honka & Lahti.

HJK was a disappointing 4th but won the Finnish cup.

Reigning champions Tampere United were far from top this year after losing two of their most influential players and getting plain shite in return. Bad luck and bad managing I must say.

KooTeePee was as bad as expected and was relegated after only winning once in the whole season. JJK from Jyväskylä won the promotion in somewhat mediocre Ykkönen and the runners-up Fc Viikingit lost the promotion play-offs against a rather solid KuPS from Kuopio who stayed in the top-flight.

What surprises lie ahead in 2009?

League Cup 2009

The League cup is not the biggest of the competitions but it is on and that is the most important thing! For the teams the games are still a testing and training occasion though so surprises are more than likely to happen. This is the the program for Groups I and II, I guess everything else is pretty obvious but the "pelikenttä" means the stadion where the game is played, and please note, it is not always the home stadium! Click the table if you can not see all the columns.

I will come back to the stadiums (stadia) and the line-ups later.

First friendly games of the season 2009 have already been played!

I have personally been watching and analysing the first two games of the last season´s runner-up FC Honka and here is a short summary of the games.

12-12-2008 Fc Honka - JJK 1-0 at Esport Arena (indoors)

Fc Honka has by far the largest material of all teams at the moment with over 20 useful players in their roster and it shows in these games so that during half-time all the players were substituted. However, the quality of the team stayed as it was. Honka was better all over the pitch and the correct score should had been around 4 to 0. Easy win against the newly promoted team from Jyväskylä. A historical moment for the visitors too, first time in the Veikkausliiga, though the match was only a friendly.

19-12-2008 Fc Honka - Fc Lahti 4-0
at Esport Arena (indoors)

The visitors were third in the league 2008 and you would not except anything like this - unless you knew that they played almost entirely without the guys who already had established themselves in the league. Only test players and under 21 players were wearing the wine-colored shirts of Lahti. That said, we can forget that this game never took place and try not to let it confuse us and include it in any history. Not to mention to make any conclusions.

It is true however that Fc Honka plays very well at the moment and they are the biggest favourite to win the title 2009.

Hello my friends! Welcome, take a seat.

This blog is an attempt to answer to the growing demand of information of football in Finland. Naturally for most of you people reading in english the curiousity derives from the fact the Finnish football league is one of the few in action in the long summer months from May to August and most games on your betting slip are played in this exotic country.

And there is no info nowhere.. you always have to hunt down a Finn from a betting forum and just hope that he knows what he is talking about. As it is, most think they do but don´t.

There is a long way to go for the season 2009 ahead of us but I am on time now. For practical reasons. I have never had a blog before, and the times of the long gone www.happypunter.com are also far behind.

So I need some practise. Some articles, some readers and acknowledgement. The plan I have timetablewise is that I start publishing news, rumours, reports and miscellaneous stuff from this moment on. At the moment there is not much to tell but the League Cup is starting in January and the building of the teams is on a way. We are getting there..

The outlook of this blog will change, I just wanted it up and running now. There will be lots of info, not everything I know but enough to help you to better knowledge and improve your success in betting on Finnish football games.

There is always room for interaction as well. I wonder who is the man brave enough to post the first comment.
