Finland League Cup this week

Four matches. In the Northern group RoPS play two away matches and at least we can expect big market moves after the odds are published on match days. AC Oulu have played very well considering that they were denied the league license and they have been fighting for their very existence. Jury is still out.

In the South HJK are already through but the win would see them win the group and hold on to the home advantage in the play-offs, MyPa vs. TPS is rather decisive for both teams. Both Southern group matches will be played outdoors, in the North they are indoor games and KuPS home match is at totally another city than Kuopio.

League Cup/North Home Away Date CET

KuPS (N) RoPS 02.03.11 13.00
AC Oulu RoPS 06.03.11 13.00

South MyPa TPS 04.03.11 14.00

Inter HJK 04.03.11 14.00

Free Finnish Football Newsletter

There are still almost two months to go before the competitive seasons start properly. Yes, the League Cup is going on as well is the Finnish Cup, but there are only a handful of matches and even most of them are of a testing and pre-season nature. Excellent analysing opportunities they are and since the season 2010 finished I have seen more than 50 matches live at the stadium to build up the knowledge.

The Newsletter last season was a success but also a good learning opportunity of what to do and what not to do, and the timing is essential on a market like this. Finding the balance between enough correct info and  the market prices and movements is a challenge, and the seemingly good-looking - and quickly dropping - early odds were often a trap which has to be avoided.

Lessons have been learned, networks are broadened and the Newsletter this season is an improved one. There will be a Free Newsletter throughout the season with background info and randomly - about twice weekly - published previews and reviews, and two paid options for the more betting-oriented audience.

What you should do now dear follower is to join at least the Free Newsletter mailing list using the form on the sidebar on the right. There really is no hurry to talk about the other services or prices in detail just yet, but the best way to stay updated is to join the mailing and following the blog!

Naturally you can unsubscribe at any time if you so wish by using the built-in forms, your email address will never be given to a third party and your privacy is fully protected.

Welcome!

Suomen Cup program - Finnish Cup

Changes in the schedule this year, and the 4th round is already on the way. The league clubs who win a play-off from the league cup can skip one round, and the final teams another one if I understood it correctly.

Finland league cup; JJK - KuPS

Highlights

JJK-KuPS will be played at a neutral venue at Seinäjoki at very uncomfortable time 13.00 CET.
Last round JJK won 5-6 away at RoPS, a scoreline you do not see every day! Both defences and goalies had a bad day out and JJK´s Jani Virtanen scored four goals making all the difference. KuPS won Jaro away 1-2 with two penalty kick goals by Ilja Venäläinen, but the line-up of KuPS was exceptional and they had made dramatic changes in the line-up, and if the injury situation continues like that they are not on my list today – at least not with a -0,25, JJK should not be any easier than Jaro were last week. In Jani Virtanen JJK have a deadly weapon for set pieces and I hope he will start.

In the official preview it says that KuPS will miss Hoivala, Balogh, Nykänen, Oravainen and Joenmäki from the regular starters and they have some youth reserves with them today, Important winger Ilo might be the center-back again today and usually he is the one responsible for creating goal chances for KuPS and feeding Venäläinen up front. JJK are well worth a bet at +0,25 @ 1.93 as I see them as favourites in this game, but their perfomances have not yet been up to expectations. If we are lucky the odds might go to our favour, there are many who like KuPS, myself included, but as mentioned the favourite here is wrong at the moment.

FT 4-4! after being 3-0 up early on.

League Cup previews - for the past weekend!

Why not keep track of what I had in mind before the round.

Home Away hc home home away Over 2.5 Over 2.75
Honka MyPa -1 1,88 1,95 1,81
Haka Inter 0,75 1,88 2,02 1,92
Jaro KuPS -0,25 1,93 1,97
1,78

Yesterday´s only match VPS-TamU 2-2 (0-2).
Interesting matches today, opening odds in the chart above, but as there are new members in the mailing list now I have to remind you that the Finnish leagues are not the ones where you should follow blindly the money – if any league ever is. So use the opening odds and market moves only as a reference. There is occasionally wise money, but often the odds also move in mysterious ways, against the info and against the actual final result.
Like I pre-warned you this is not a day for pre-match Honka bets and the odds look really short. In fact, given the latest performances MyPa would be worth a bet, but Honka home advantage indoors is so huge that I can not advise it. This match is also a part of today´s live schedule and I think it is better to be safe than sorry. I will let you know from the venue how it goes, so you can expect a couple of short messages live during the first half, kick-off CET 12.15. Honka home matches usually produce bucketfuls of goals and over 2.75 is likely to drop.

Honka have again two American test players, one of them played last week vs. Haka and the other one is a new guy, and all in all there is a lot of material to choose from and predicting the line-up of Honka in this is a meaningless affair, but it should be a competitive one. MyPa are trouble-free and hungry after last week´s good but pointless visit to HJK. However, their coach promised to give more playing time to those who did not get it vs HJK it would favour Honka a lot.

Edit: FT 5-3 (2-3) Honka were 0-3 down after 20 minutes!  Test players were mediocre and crap and personally I can not understand how difficult it can be earlier to see that they bring no added value to the team.

Haka host Inter and I already took the visitors. Inter are a team who often fail to cover big handicaps in full and a 0-1 FT result would be no surprise, but then again with the current squads a win by two goals is much more likely than Haka securing a draw. We have discussed Haka a lot and very little has changed, they lack quality and quantity player-wise and especially 2nd half is likely to be a painful affair to them. It could be underish as Inter have a tight defence and the freexing temperature does not help, but on the other hand Haka defence is very weak and this is like a coin-toss in the end.

Haka welcome back df Mattila and gk Pesonen, Inter get back again their injury-prone top striker Furuholm and Abramovic might start as well. This would be a good match to take live, but it requires too much travel and freezing as it will be played outdoors so I choose Honka match instead. Kick-off 12.30 CET.

Edit: FT 0-1 (0-1). No Furuholm or Abramovic in the starting line-up and ft result as expected.

Jaro welcome KuPS to their indoor arena today. Again, big home advantage and the visitors in good form – except that they have a few injuries and reportedly are going through a tough training period. Jaro are not without injury worries either, but at this time of the day there are no confirmed team news and the doubtful players in all teams are exactly that, they might play or not and that will not be confirmed before seeing the official line-ups. In their opening match Jaro drew 2-2 with VPS and seemed to tire badly on the second half and lost their two goals lead, KuPS were the comfortable winners of the Lahti Cup and striker Ilja Venäläinen was in huge form scoring 6 goals in 3 games. A man to watch, and he also earned his first NT match away in Ghent this week.

Jaro have several doubtful players but welcome important Vasiljev back, KuPS are without Hoivala and Oravainen from the regular starters and Balogh is doubtful. I do like to look of KuPS also this season but they could be stiff from heavy training. Both Jaro home matches this season have produced 4 goals each.

FT 1-2 (0-1) Venäläinen scored twice from the penalty spot, there were a lot of missings on both sides.

13.2.2011

Finland vs. Bolivia cancelled

Due to suspicious refereeing in Antalya where this match was also scheduled for March 25th. The Bolivian FA had aseked FIFA to study the actions of the referee in last week´s matches when in the matches Bolivia - Latvia and Bulgaria - Estonia there were 7 penalties awarded, possibly in order to secure the "over" bets in match totals.

Yeah, 7 penalties, the matches ended 2-2 and 2-1 and the betting behaviour was heavily supporting the idea of over 2.5 goals in both games. It was just a coincidence perhaps?

11.2.2011

Finland League Cup; VPS - TamU on Friday

Opened at -0,25 @ 1.9 for VPS and has moved a bit.

A few notes about the match:

  • very big home advantage in indoor league cup matches
  • several missing players from VPS - especially midfield
  • VPS have played already twice in this cup, 2-2 & 0-0 with Jaro and JJK
  • TamU have new coach since last season - Jarkko Wiss
  • TamU were in the Lahti Cup, reached the final but could not recover from being one goal down to KuPS, until then they looked like an improved version of TamU 2010.
  • First competitive match for TamU, Wiss talks about building the team from defenee upwards
TamU are classwise a better team, VPS home advantage evens things up and -0,25 is an acceptable line for this and raises no interest from me. If there are dramatic late line-up news and/or market moves this might turn interesting, but there is no useful live coverage and with the current information I will let this go through my fingers. My hunch would be TamU, but I do not want to underestimate the home advantage here and will wait for tomorrow´s round.

Total line at 2.5 makes sense and I do not want to start guessing, but the market will probably move towards over here.

Tomorrow in League Cup

Honka - MyPa
Haka - Inter
Jaro - KuPS

and Newsletter customers are the only ones to receive actual betting tips if there are any, depends on the odds and late team news.

About previews - an example from Argentina

There are several ways to approach and analyze the matches at hand. Statistics are important as are fresh and reliable team news - and the conclusions made out  of them. In my experience nothing beats local knowledge and hundreds of hours spent by the pitch, following the matches on tv as well covering fully the local media. During the pre-season I am not personally writing any previews due the lack of information and the nature of the matches, but there are others who are at full speed at the moment.

One of my absolute favourites in this preview business is MNC who covers Argentinian football with experience, skill, passion and profit, you can follow his work and ideas through his blog at Argentinapreviews.

Like many professionals in the game there is also a professional version for the needy and hungry of precise and well-timed  information, but the least you should do is to follow his blog now as the season is about to start. If you are interested, contact him for more info on what is on offer.

My own project with the Finnish Football Newsletter is still free of charge for some time until the leagues start properly and a few interested might still fit in. Email me if you are interested at puntteri@gmail.com

Back to Argentina now -here is a random sample of a match at Libertadores Cup for Feb 9th:
*****

February 9, 2011 Copa Libertadores, Group 3
Fluminense (Brazil) – Argentinos Juniors (Argentina)

Fluminense (Brazil)
Suspended : -
Injured : Deco (midfielder, played few games in 2010, out indefinitely), Emerson (striker, regular), Belleti (defender, played few games in 2010)
Uncertain : -

Last Matches :
3/2 Fluminense 3 – Duque de Caxias 1 (Brazil Carioca 2011 Round 5)
6/2 Fluminense 2 – Botafogo 3 (Brazil Carioca 2011 Round 6)

Fluminense was coming from winning the 1st 5 rounds of the 1st stage of the Rio de Janeiro state championship (against mostly poor teams) and even though they had already advanced to the semifinals, it was an important game for them because with a win they would secure the 1st place of the group and the chance to avoid playing the huge derby vs Flamengo (who won the other group) .
The game was very open, with Botafogo scoring the 1st goal but Fluminense ended the 1st half winning 2-1.
The visitors took control in the 2nd half, and took a very important win and the lead of Group B with only 1 round left which means they will have a easier semifinal for this 1st stage of the state championship.

Argentinos Juniors (Argentina)
Suspended : -
Injured : -
Uncertain : -

Last Matches :
They’ve only played some informal friendlies during the preseason training.

Comments :

Argentinos Juniors qualified to Copa Libertadores by winning Clausura 2010 back in May, but 9 months later and after a poor Apertura they have a very different team. To make things worst for them, only 3 days ago their best player, team captain and soul of this team, midfielder Nestor Ortigoza was sold to San Lorenzo (money was too good to reject for a small club) which put fans in very bad mood. The other team players looked not happy at all with this decision as they said to the press this last days and coach Pedro Troglio (who was almost fired in Clausura after a very poor start but “survived” with a couple of wins) will have a very difficult job rebuilding his team morale. Fluminense is the Brazil Serie A champion of 2010 (won it after 26 years) and seem to be a better team than last year as they’ve added striker Rafael Moura, who makes a very dangerous offense with ex-Lyon Fred. Playing at Brazil is always a difficult task, and Argentinos Jrs arriving with poor morale and in a week where they didn’t seem focused on this game due to the departure of their best player, will be more than happy to go back to Argentina with the smallest defat possible.

Prediction : 2-0
