Turku - the football capital of Finland?

Personally I do not like at all the fact the at the moment the questionmark could be withdrawn. Unfortunately the facts speak for themselves now, let us take a look why.

Inter Turku is the reigning champion. For the first time in their short history of existence and with a bang after leading the league from the start to the finish. And with a style of play that made most other clubs envious.

TPS Turku was according to some experts the favourite before the season though it did not take long to notice that a lot of mistakes had been taken. The manager of the previous season - Mixu Paatelainen, now back at Hibs - had brought in players that suited his needs and understanding of football and the view of football of the next manager to come, the legendary Martti Kuusela could not have been more different.

TPS boasts the biggest budget and the profile players and again a new high-profile manager in Pasi Rautiainen and the derbies between TPS and Inter attract the biggest crowds in Finland.

Traditionally Helsinki has been the home for the biggest club HJK but they seem to have problems in identificating themselves and have lost ground to Turku.

Occasionally the champions have come from smaller towns supported by strong sponsors´s from the paper industry but times seem to changing.

Tampere still has also to prove themselves, there was big talk as TamU as the Rosenborg of Finland but now there has been only silece coming from Tampere.

Honka from Espoo is also talking big and planning a bright future. Time will tell.
